the tour

In November 2013, performance poet and rapper Kate Tempest and Battersea Arts Centre, embarked on a journey together to tour the award winning show Brand New Ancients. Scroll down for more about the show itself.

The tour includes 9 London venues including the Royal Opera House, Harrow Arts Centre, Lyric Hammersmith and Battersea Arts Centre, as well as 5 regional venues across the country from Contact in Manchester to Brighton Dome.

As part of our Brand New Ancients tour, Battersea Arts Centre has produced three unique films based on the theatre production. We have just released the first film in tandem with the opening performances at The Royal Court. Click here to watch and find out more…

The show

The gods are in the betting shops, the gods are in the cafe,
The gods can’t afford the deposit on their flat…
Winged sandals tearing up the pavement,
Me, you, everyone, brand new ancients

An epic spoken word performance of every day Gods, Brand New Ancients follows two South London families as their respective generations grow and intertwine into a parable of modern life. Highlighting the immortal and very real truths of love and loss, Brand New Ancients is a call to arms for the modern day hero. Set over an exhilarating live score played by tuba, cello, violin, drums and electronics, Tempest finds the gods of today all around us and reveals that our true heroes are much closer than we think.

Brand New Ancients is a Battersea Arts Centre co-production which has been developed with audiences through the Scratch process. Tempest is a visionary artist who encapsulates many of the values which Battersea Arts Centre holds as part of theatre’s future; from her ability to play and provoke simultaneously, to being able to unite an audience into a community.
